Williamsburg Virginia Engagement Photographer | Colonial Williamsburg | Emily + Matthew

June 17, 2018

Where do I even begin with these two?! You’ve seen them on my blog before if you follow me closely because I shot their Keswick Vineyards proposal a few months ago!! That was one of my favorite days and if you read that post you’ll learn why. I loved my time with Emily and Matt so much and I was sad when they left to go back to Pennsylvania the day they got engaged because I knew their wedding would be there instead of in Virginia and my chances of working with them again were probably slim. But a few days later I got an email from Matt saying they had to hire me and my heart exploded into a million pieces. I absolutely love working with clients like them who value photography. It just allows me to capture people well because they trust me and they are excited about getting photos done.

So sure enough, my dream came true and a couple weeks later, I had their wedding officially on my calendar and Emily became a Meredith Sledge bride!! I felt like her friend from the start so I love that throughout the process, she has texted me outfit questions, sent me photos of her venue, and expressed her excitement for her wedding! It makes it so enjoyable showing up to a day like their engagement session knowing they can’t wait to be there!

A few months ago, we set a June date for their engagement shoot in Williamsburg, a town that they both love and have spent a good bit of time in but as the days were getting closer, we were both checking the weather and it wasn’t looking good. Emily and Matt had traveled to Williamsburg from Pennsylvania for a few days and the last day they had planned to be in town when we had scheduled their shoot was supposed to be rainy! I texted Emily and told her I didn’t want to risk her getting hair and makeup done and then have it rain and she agreed. Luckily, Matt got an extra day off and they decided to stay one more day so we pushed their shoot back one day because the weather for that day was 0% chance a rain. I was so excited it worked out because I really wanted to make it work for them and shoot these pictures in adorable Colonial Williamsburg. Well, as I was driving the two hours down, with every passing minute, it got cloudier and cloudier. Then I passed into Williamsburg and I kid you not, it started POURING. I wasn’t too worried because the weather said 0% so I figured it would just be a short shower….

After I parked, I started to location scout and the rain had died down. I told Emily not to worry and that it would be perfect. Well, they met me back at the parking garage and it was pouring again….. At this point I still figured it would stop raining any minute so I got out my clear umbrella for them, put a large one over myself, and we went out to start shooting. And we kept shooting and shooting and it kept raining and raining. Haha!! Honestly, it was quite the experience. I’ve shot a wedding in a hurricane so honestly, it wasn’t THAT bad but still, I knew Emily had wished for sunny skies and this was just not it.

Despite the terrible weather, Emily and Matt were seriously troopers. I didn’t hear them complain once and they did not let the rain ruin their time together. I know Emily was probably worried but she let go and just had fun and made the best of it which truly is the reason these pictures are some of my all-time favorites. I wouldn’t have wanted to be shooting a two-hour engagement session in the rain with anyone else!! 🙂

Emily and Matt, you guys are a dream!!!! I just adore you guys and I’m SO grateful that the rain ended up stopping when we started your second outfit but regardless, I love all your photos and I hope you do too!!! Can’t WAIT for your wedding at Linwood Estate next year!!!
