Looking back through this proposal from last week makes me so happy! There was just something special about this day and I think it was the fact that Emily was completely shocked that Matt got down on one knee. Proposals are supposed to be a surprise, right? Well, most girls are sneaky intuitive and end up figuring it out somehow beforehand. Haha!! But Matt did an amazing job at keeping this a secret and doing it WAY sooner than Emily thought!
Matt, his mom, and his sister came down a few days before the proposal to meet me at Keswick Vineyards to plan it all out and get a bottle of wine to put his custom label on and I loved my short time with them dreaming out what would soon be one of Matt’s most memorable days. I said bye that day and he gave me the very important task of keeping the bottle of wine and bringing it to put down in front of the house later that week when he proposed. I carried it safely around in my car all week and it was a constant reminder of the excitement I’d get to share in and capture on my camera soon enough.
The big day finally arrived and I got there a little before they planned to walk from the tasting room to the house so I could get in place behind the tree. I crouched down and tried not to blow away as the wind picked up. Normally, I would have just listened for their voices and footsteps but because of the wind, I couldn’t hear ANYTHING so I had to peek out until I saw them approach the hill and then quickly pop back behind the bush until Emily turned her back. When they got closer and she turned slightly, I hopped out from behind the tree and waited, knowing at that point if she saw me it wouldn’t be a big deal.
Matt grabbed her hands and put her in place so that I would capture her reaction, he instructed her to pick up the bottle, and got on one knee!!! Emily was so overwhelmed that I think it took her five whole minutes to actually realize what had just happened. Haha! I gave them a couple minutes and then ran over to hug them. This was obviously my first time meeting Emily and I could tell right away that she was so sweet and that they were going to be fun to photograph. After she collected her thoughts and stared at her gorgeous new ring, we did about an hour of photos and we had the best time!!! I absolutely loved my time with these two and am so thankful I got to be a part of such a sweet, sweet day. I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else than capturing their newly engaged joy. Emily and Matt, I’m honestly sad you both don’t live closer but I hope we get to work together again and I can’t WAIT to hear about all your wedding plans!
