Kat and Drew first met in high school, but it wasn’t until Drew just happened to decide to sit behind her in AP history that they started talking in earnest. Kat had always thought that the guy with the long curly brown hair was witty, smart, and made her smile, and Drew had always had a crush on Kat. While Kat was mostly focused on learning about Thomas Jefferson and the rest of the Founding Fathers in that class, more importantly, she remembers thinking that there was something attractive about the guy who always asked to copy her homework. Drew of course didn’t care about the homework, but thought it was a good way to start a conversation, and spent the next year courting Kat with the signature eloquence and style of a 17 year old boy. His efforts ultimately lead to a first date at California Pizza Kitchen, a Homecoming Dance (even though Kat originally turned down his offer), and eventually Prom.
While they didn’t stay together upon going to different colleges, they ultimately found that they couldn’t stop talking to one another, and got back together the following year. They spent the next several years traveling between schools – first to and from UNCW to UVA, where everything Kat learned about Jefferson paid off; and from Duke, where Drew went to grad school, to Northern Virginia, where Kat was living and working. After the two were living in the D.C. area for a few years again (finally!), the inevitable happened. Kat always thought Drew would take her to California Pizza Kitchen again to propose; Drew—probably knowing Kat too well—planned something different to surprise her. On June 2, 2018, he planned a surprise weekend, complete with a date at the Inn at Little Washington. They got to the restaurant a little early because Drew said he wanted to walk through the fields and look at the mountains (nothing out of the ordinary).
However, halfway through their walk, Drew got down on one knee and proposed, and even had a photographer there to capture the moment. The next day, he took Kat to a winery on the way home where he had planned a surprise engagement party with family and friends! It was the best way to end the most perfect weekend. It’s not often you get to marry your “high school sweetheart,” as cliché of a story it is. Kat and Drew have seen each other grow over the last ten years into adults, through highs and lows, from longer to now shorter hair (thankfully, Kat says). They know each other better than anyone else, and are truly each other’s best friends. They can’t wait to build on their decade long friendship into a lifetime of love and happiness, and are incredibly thankful for the love and support they’ve had from family and friends who have watched their love grow over the years. In the words of Kat and Drew, ” Here’s to the next 10 decades!”
