Ever since I became a photographer, I dreamed of the day that I would get to travel and photograph couples. If you had shown me this shoot below eight years ago when I decided I wanted to be a photographer, I never would have believed I took these. I probably wouldn’t have even believed I had been in Colorado, looking out at a view as majestic as this, much less shooting the cutest couple at that view.
I first visited Colorado about four years ago with my best friend Megan. She actually had a photoshoot and invited me out to come knowing I always took up every opportunity to visit new places. We had the best time in the Denver area but I didn’t get to see Aspen until two years ago when I came out to second shoot a wedding with a photographer in the middle of fall. I will never forget the drive I took from the Denver airport to Aspen on Independence Pass. I was blasting my music, windows down, and I think I squealed every time I saw a yellow Aspen tree. My soul is filled up when I travel and when there’s beautiful views involved, I truly feel on top of the world. So add in a couples session at an epic location and I can barely contain my joy. Haha.
Sam and I visited Aspen last month around the peak of fall and it was his first time going so I was beyond excited to show him why I loved it so much! We did the same drive I did two years ago because anyone visiting Aspen in the fall has to go that route if you fly into Denver. It’s absolutely unreal. On our drive in, we stopped at this overlook which sits at over 12,000 feet high. We got out and walked around before we had adjusted to the altitude and we legitimately couldn’t talk to each other because we were having so much trouble breathing. It was crazy!! So the next evening when I had my shoot, naturally this is the location I decided to do it.
Thankfully we were more adjusted by the next day but just to give you some perspective, you’ll see in these photos that the trees stop growing on the mountain at a certain point. That’s because there’s not enough oxygen for them above 11,000 or so feet! The landscape of this location reminded me a little bit of Iceland — it was so breathtaking (literally… get it?!)!
I am SO thankful one of my sweet friends and brides connected me to Brooke and Tom! They drove all the way from Vail for this shoot and we had the best time. They were so down for anything and even in the freezing cold, they were laughing. I still am not over these images and I am SO stoked to finally have them edited and on the blog today! Brooke and Tom, you guys are the BEST!! Thank you for being the best models!
